How to Care for Your Yarn & Handmade Items

A little care keeps your yarn and finished pieces looking beautiful for years. Here are our simple tips.

Before You Start

Always check the label on your yarn for specific washing instructions, as care varies by fibre. When in doubt, hand wash gently.

Washing

• Acrylic yarn: machine washable on a gentle, cool cycle; very easy care.
• Wool & wool blends: hand wash in cool water with mild detergent; avoid wringing.
• Cotton & milk cotton: gentle cool wash; may shrink slightly in hot water.
• Velvet (chenille): hand wash gently; do not rub hard to protect the pile.

Drying

Never wring out handmade items. Gently press out water, then lay flat on a towel to dry in shape. Avoid direct sunlight and hanging, which can stretch your work.

Storing

Store yarn in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and damp. Keep it in bags or boxes to protect from dust and insects.
